Examination of water reports, 1886-1892.

Series 1 of record group 76-131 consists of the examination of water reports of the State Board of Fish Commissioners for the years 1886-1892. Provides a brief physical description of individual interior lakes in the state and the results of examination of waters as well as future fish planting recommendations. The name of the lake and the county and township the lake is located in are provided. The physical descriptions consists of length, width, greatest depth, character of lake shore and bottom, and details concerning inlets and outlets. A map of each lake showing shape, depth, and location of inlets and outlets accompanies each report. The water examinations include such information as weather conditions, temperature on surface and bottom of lake, condition of water (muddy, clear, etc.), number and kind of fish taken, and other similar information. Includes and index at the front of each volume.

On April 19, 1873, the Michigan Legislature established the State Board of Fish Commissioners "to increase the product of the fisheries, and to make an appropriation therefor." The Board was incorporated on March 9, 1882 and was entrusted with the supervision of the fishing interests and the enforcement of the laws for the protection of fish and fisheries of the state.
